Newport News Public Library (NNPL) will be hosting a food drive and amnesty event, Can Your Fines, starting on Monday, November 25. The annual event, which spans from the Monday before Thanksgiving until New Year’s Eve, gives patrons the opportunity to pay off fines on their accounts and give back to the community. Instead of paying cash for fines during this period, patrons are able to pay with cans of nonperishable foods and some nonfood items. All the items collected during this period will be donated to the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank.
Interested patrons should bring items to the service desk at a Newport News Public Library branch of choice. All NNPL branches–Grissom, Main Street, Pearl Bailey and South Morrison–are participating in Can Your Fines. A library staff member at the service desk will verify the patron’s account and give credit for the items donated. One food or personal item will take care of one fine. Food drive boxes provided by the Foodbank will be placed in the lobby of each library.
Unopened non-food items are accepted as well such as toothpaste, diapers, and shampoo. No alcoholic beverages or sodas can be accepted.
In the last two years, NNPL has collected more than 4,500 pounds of food for those in need.
